National Quality Forum (NQF)
The NQF has focused considerable attention on VTE because "there is no doubt that VTE is serious, frequently fatal, and preventable."
The NQF, in partnership with The Joint Commission, initiated the National Voluntary Consensus Standards for Prevention and Care of Venous Thromboembolism to standardize performance measures for the prevention and treatment of VTE. In 2006, NQF endorsed the following:
- A statement of policy
- Seventeen key characteristics of preferred practices
- Two prophylaxis measures for surgical patients at risk for or diagnosed with VTE
Recently, the NQF endorsed an additional 6 performance measures to advance the ability of organizations and the public to measure VTE prevention and care improvement. They are outlined in the table below.
